Summer Fun Music Workshops For Your Students (part 2)

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS, CUP RHYTHMS, BODY PERCUSSION

In part two of Summer Music Workshops we are going to talk about rhythm.

Rhythm is an important element in music and in life as well. During rhythm workshops children learn various rhythm patterns easily while having fun.

Everything in the universe has a rhythm, everything dances

-Maya Angelou

Rhythm can be and should be fun!

There are wonderful workshops you can create relating to rhythm.

Children enjoy creating rhythms either with their instruments or with their bodies.

Introduce your students to different kinds of rhythm workshops and see what their favourite will be.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF RHYTHM WORKSHOPS?

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS WORKSHOP

Start with  a percussion instruments workshop.

Introduce your students the Orff instruments family and create beautiful rhythms altogether.

Some percussion instruments you can use are maracas, egg shakers, guiros, lolippop drums, tambourines, triangles, claves, sleighbells, bongos, castanets, cowbells etc.

You may also want to add djembes or other drums. It depends on what you and  your students have or what you would like to buy.

Start with easy rhythm patterns and then try some more comlicated ones.

Create a small percussion orchestra.

Accompany a nice song or music piece with your orchestra.

Teach  your students some African rhythm patterns.

You may hear some songs here and you can find an introduction guide with African rhythm patterns here.

Check these classroom activities for more inspiration.

CREATE YOUR OWN INSTRUMENTS

Children love crafts!! Children love rhythm!!

Let’s combine both in a workshop!

Help your students create their own  percussion instruments and create some musical patterns with them.

Here is a DIY music instruments YouTube playlist  I’ve created for your inspiration.

Hint: Take your students for an excursion to the forest and introduce them to nature sounds. Them let them play their music with the DIY percussion instruments they have created.

BUCKET DRUMMING WORKSHOPS

Bucket drumming workshops are awesome!

You don't need any music instruments, you don't have to make either, just use buckets and pencils or drum sticks.

Check these videos for more ideas!!

BODY PERCUSSION WORKSHOP

For this workshop we don’t need any instruments  but we use our hands, fingers, mouth, legs, feet chest to produce sounds and rhythm patterns.

It's an amazing workshop that combines body movements and rhythmic patterns.

For tutorials and more inspiration check  Santi Serratosa Lopez’s YouTube playlist

You definitely need to check Salvo Russo’s YouTube channel and also search for Keith Terry’s videos.

Ball percussion is an alternative interesting workshop especially for boys.

CUP RHYTHMS WORKSHOP

For the cups workshops you will use cups of course.

Wendy Stevens from Compose Create has wonderful ideas with cup rhythms that children will love. Check her shop here.
